This week, a BDS (Boycott Divestment Sanctions) resolution was submitted to the Student Government Association at the University of Maryland calling on the university “to divest from companies engaged in human rights violations in Palestine.” The full text of the resolution can be found here.
This effort is part of a nationwide BDS campaign to single out, delegitimize, and pressure Israel. At home, the BDS movement continues to negatively impact Jewish students and supporters of Israel on college campuses. Abroad, the BDS movement hinders efforts to reach Arab-Israeli peace. At times, BDS efforts descend into anti-Semitism. The bill will be voted upon on Wednesday, April 24th when many Jewish students will be away for Passover. The Hillel at UMD is taking a leadership role to counter the bill and has initiated a petition. While it is preferable for current UMD students, alumni and parents of students/alumni to sign the petition to combat the resolution, non-UMD affiliated individuals are invited and encouraged to sign as well.
Please sign and share the petition.
