Meet the Officers- Charles Jalenak, Chair, Jewish Foundation of Memphis

New officers for Jewish Community Partners, Memphis Jewish Federation, and Jewish Foundation of Memphis were elected at JCP’s 3rd Annual Meeting, held earlier this month. Experienced community leader Charles Jalenak was elected to hold the Jewish Foundation of Memphis’ Chair for a two year term.

What is your current role with JCP, Memphis Jewish Federation or Jewish Foundation of Memphis?

I currently sit on the Board of all three organizations, Chair the Jewish Foundation of Memphis, and Chair the JCP Investment Committee.

 

Describe the most impactful Jewish moment for you as a child.

Attending Sunday School at the old Temple at Poplar and Montgomery and my Bar Mitzvah at Temple Israel’s new location on East Massey.

 

What are your earliest memories of Tzedakah?

Going to the Jewish Home with my grandmother who was a frequent volunteer.

 

Who has been the most influential person to you?

My parents have always been an inspiration and role models for the way I live my life.

 

Why did you decide to take such an active part in the Jewish community?

To take part in sustaining the incredible Jewish tradition of l’dor vador.

How has your role in leadership created value in your life?

It’s helping me to instill important beliefs and values to my children from leading by example just as my parents did for me.

 

What does the word community mean to you?

People with shared beliefs, values, and goals, with a common vision to sustain them.

 

 

Who do you admire most in the Jewish community and why?

Jimmy Jalenak because of his energy, intellect, and dedication of so much of his time not only to the Jewish community in Memphis, but also the entire Memphis community.

 

What do you consider the most important issue the Jewish community faces today?

Preparing for the Memphis Jewish community of tomorrow.

 

What would you like to see change in the current Jewish community atmosphere?

Working towards a better sense of unity around the globe for Judaism as a whole.
